Penrith

(north along the A592, 13 miles)

 

Morrisons, Somerfields, Boots, WH Smith, Woolworths, Burtons, Argos, and a variety of small shops, plus all of the major banks/building societies

Alhambra "Twin Screen" Cinema – not quite a multiplex, but they try their best, bless them…

Carlisle

(20 miles up the M6 from Penrith, 33 miles from here)

Quite a good city centre for general shopping – many of the major chains can be found here as well as some nice smaller local places
Also has a Castle to visit, several cinemas, "10-pin Bowling" and "Laser Quest" (whatever that is?)

Ambleside & Windermere

(8 & 11 miles over Kirkstone Pass – follow signposts at top)
A bit touristy over there, can be difficult to park – but there are a variety of eateries and shops that will keep you occupied if you’re that way inclined
Cinemas in both. Zeferrellis at Ambleside does a great cinema "meal deal’.
It’s quite pretty as well, we suppose…. but not a patch on here! No siree.
