So you want to entertain the kids for the day, or perhaps you’d like to get your own adrenaline pumping… then visit one of the nearby outdoor activity centres for an unforgettable day out. Brochures for each are available from the Estate office |

Patterdale Hall

Just metres away from your door, you can organise a variety of activities here including kayaking, sailing, canoeing, fell walking, rock-climbing, abseiling, caving, orienteering, gorge exploring, archery, and ropes courses! You will have to book in advance to be sure, and a minimum group size of six is preferable, although they say it’s
"always worth asking" if you have fewer folk than that.

Ullswater Outward Bound
(6 miles up the lake road, in Watermillock)

Tackle the famous Outward Bound ropes courses or the heart-stopping zip-wire, plus many other exciting challenges. Again you should book in advance, but the OB can cater for individuals and groups alike. You can book in for a morning, afternoon or full day session in which you’ll enjoy canoeing, climbing, orienteering games and much more!

Howtown Outdoor Activity Centre
(‘Steamer" cruise to Howtown, or drive 12 miles)

Sailing, kayaking, rock-climbing, gully-scrambling, archery, orienteering, ropes courses and rafting are all on offer here. Book in advance for a great day out – they’ll even collect children from the Steamer pier at Howtown and put them back on the boat to Glenridding at the end of the day, but don’t forget that all children travelling on the ferries must be accompanied by somebody of 14 years or older.

Rookin House Equestrian & Activity Centre

A wide range of activities suitable for adults and children include horse riding lessons, pony trekking, quad biking, the argo cat off-road experience (?), go-karting, archery, clay pigeon shooting and even riding in an amphibious army truck! Again, booking is essential.

An off road driving Centre with over 3000 acres for playing around on quad bikes - they even have mini-quads for children of 12 years and over.
